*Each year, at the Valedictory Ceremony, the RSS Alumni Association gives out a Special Recognition Award. This award can be given to a past graduate, teacher, administrator or anyone in the community who has made a significant contribution to the Grads of Richmond Secondary School. If there is someone you think should be recognized, please feel free to contact the Alumni Association.
Our History of Recipients:
2022
These past 2 years have been very challenging not only for the students but for the RSS staff. They have navigated through this time with their goal being only to teach the students in order that they may continue on with their education.
Every year, we have the honor of presenting the RSS Alumni Special Recognition Award to a deserving recipient who has made a difference in the community and at Richmond High. This year we decided to do things a little differently and recognize more than one person.
As you know community is very important to the staff and students at Richmond High. These past 2 years we have seen these individuals go above and beyond. Learning how to evolve and reimagine with the everchanging ways to teach all of you whether it was virtually or in the class. They made it possible to still enjoy concerts, intramurals, sports, Breakfast with Santa and so much more. They are creative, dedicated, persistent, supportive, committed and incredible people. They have a ‘never give up’ attitude. They continually found new ways teach over the past two years. They went above and beyond to make sure the Class of 2022 had a memorable year. I am in awe of what they have accomplished over the past 2 years and I just can’t say enough about these special and gifted recipients. I would like to ask Ms. Susan Campbell, Ms. Cindy Ho and Mr. Gideon Lin to please come up and accept this award.
It is my greatest pleasure to announce that this year’s RSS Alumni Special Recognition Award for 2022 is being presented to Richmond Secondary School Staff – all 107 of them.
Congratulations - and thank you for your dedication and service – “You are the best”.

2021
We can't believe that another whole year has passed by. A truly different year for all of the students at RSS especially the 'Class of 2021'.
All of the celebrations that the Grads would have participated in have been sidelined due to Covid-19.
The Staff at RSS has done a fantastic job of creating new ways of doing things for all the students.
This years Grad was unlike any other and I believe that the students felt very special with all of the efforts that were made to do so.
Every year, we present the RSS Alumni Special Recognition Award to a deserving recipient who has made a difference in their community. This year’s recipient was a teacher at Richmond High from 1972 - 1982. He is an avid sports fan that coached badminton, curling, volleyball, soccer, cross country and track and field. His is someone that has contributed to the school and to sports in an outstanding manner. While coaching, he became involved with BC School Sports and took on many roles including President and served on the Board of Directors. Upon retirement he worked part time with BCSS which concluded over 30 years of service to BC School Sports.
The Alumni Association is delighted to recognize Mr. Bob Jackson as the recipient of the RSS Alumni Special Recognition Award for 2021. Congratulations Bob - and thank you for your dedication and service.

2020
What a different year this has been, unlike any other in the history of the school.
Everything has changed and everything is different, but we can still find ways to celebrate the Graduation of the Class of 2020.
It is that time of year when we present a recipient with the R.S.S. Alumni Association Special Recognition Award.
This person is respected by the students, staff and community. It is someone that has contributed to the school and or community in an outstanding manner. This year’s recipient grew up in Richmond in the 60’s and 70’s. This person graduated in 1978 although it was from Steveston and continued their education at UBC and became a teacher and then an Administrator.
Over the past 5 years we have watched all of the wonderful things he has done for the school, his fairness and involvement, his caring and compassion for the staff and students. All of the things he has brought to the school in the name of community and inclusivity. The activities he has created for the Colt Community; Grade 8 Camp, Breakfast with Santa and the Colt Carnival to name a few. He has brought the students and staff together for a greater sense of community.
We are pleased to announce that the recipient of the Richmond Secondary School Alumni Association – Special Recognition Award for 2020 – is Mr. Jim Allison. We will be presenting a R.S.S. Alumni Special Recognition Award Scholarship 2020 in your name, in the amount of $250.00 to a deserving Grad at the Virtual Valedictory for the RHS Grad Class of 2020.
“Congratulations” on behalf of the RSS Alumni Board of Directors

2019This year we are recognizing two past grads– actually two brothers, Doug and Ron Paterson. The extended Paterson family has lived in Richmond for years and many graduated from Richmond High. Both Doug, a grad of the class of 1971 and Ron, a grad of the class of 1974, were involved in many school activities but more importantly they were involved with community sports – specifically hockey.
In 1972, a new hockey team was formed in Richmond by a Mr. Bruce Allison. If that name sounds familiar it is because Bruce Allison is Mr. Jim Allison’s father. The team was the Richmond Sockeyes.
Doug Paterson was the first captain of the Sockeyes Hockey team. Over the years Doug continued to be connected with the Sockeyes Organization. So much so that he is currently one of the owners of the team. Through his Richmond business and hockey connections, he has been able to provide hockey scholarships to numerous deserving student players.
Doug’s brother Ron Paterson also played for the Sockeyes, as well as the UBC Hockey team and Team Canada at the 1980 Winter Olympics. Ron also continued to be involved with the Sockeyes organization until recently he started his own hockey team – the White Rock Whalers. Through Ron Paterson’s businesses he is able to provide ongoing fundraiser opportunities for many organizations – including the Richmond Secondary Alumni Association. Many of the scholarships that we will be handing out today come as a direct result of fundraising that Ron Paterson was able to help us run. For that we are grateful.
In recognition of all that both Doug and Ron Paterson have done to support the students and sports in Richmond we will be giving out two scholarships today, one in each of their names.
Unfortunately, Doug Paterson could not be here with us today, but at this time I would like to ask Ron Paterson to come forward for recognition and a round of applause as a thank you for all that he and his brother Doug have done for the community of Richmond.

One of the main reasons I am here this evening is to present a “Special Recognition award” to a student or a staff member of the school. This annual award recognizes a person, an alumni, staff member or student of the school, who has made a special contribution to the community. This years’ recipient has been described by the students as outgoing, humorous, a sports enthusiast, and a world traveller. This person first entered the doors of Richmond High in 1989 as a student and a basketball player. The Basketball team went on to win the Provincials during 1990-91. “He” graduated from Richmond High in 1991 and returned as a teacher in September 2006. He is a huge part of the Global family and has changed the perspectives of over 400 students on the 11 Global Trips and 3Grad Trips, not to mention all the lives he has forever changed around the world. We are very pleased to present the 2018 Richmond High Alumni Special Recognition Award to Mr. Kevin Matheny

This annual award recognizes a person, an alumni, staff member or student of the school, who has made a special contribution to the community. This year, two worthy individuals have been selected for this recognition.
Our first recipient is a truly dedicated and passionate Richmondite, Mr. Harold Steves. Mr. Steves’ family is one of Richmond’s founding families and the community of Steveston was named after the Steves family. Harold grew up in Richmond, graduated from Richmond High in 1955 and then went on to graduate from UBC with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture.
Today, Harold and his wife Kathy still live in the old farmhouse on Steveston Highway where they continue to raise cattle and produce unique vegetable and flower seeds. Mr. Steves is also a former teacher in Richmond. Some of our Alumni directors here today were fortunate to have been taught by Harold and then have the opportunity to work with him as colleagues at Quilchena Elementary.
Harold has a very long and distinguished record of public service. He served as a Richmond municipal Alderman from 1968 to 1973 and as a Councillor since 1977. Harold was also elected to the Provincial Legislature and served as a Richmond MLA from 1973-1975. He continues to be very active in community life and is specifically passionate about the preservation of farmland, heritage conservation and the environment. To this day Harold serves on many committees where his attention, concern, knowledge and expertise are greatly valued and appreciated. He continues to tirelessly work to preserve our community and environment. The Alumni Association is delighted to recognize this Colt graduate with our Special Recognition Award.
Our next recipient is Mr. Kiichi Kumagai. Mr. Kumagai was born in Vancouver and his family relocated to Vernon during World War II. After the Second World War the family moved to Richmond and he attended Richmond High for Grades 11 & 12 graduating in 1957. Mr. Kumagai worked as a fisherman and then for the International Pacific Salmon Fisheries Commission. Thereafter, he worked as a stock brokerage account executive in Toronto and Vancouver, and subsequently as a consultant. With his wife Mary, they raised two daughters in Richmond
Mr. Kumagai is an active community volunteer with Big Brothers, the Canada-Japan Society and the Greater Vancouver Japanese Canadian Citizens Society. He was a Richmond Kiwanis Club director and Treasurer of the Kiwanis Senior Citizens Housing Society.
Mr. Kumagai became the first Japanese-Canadian to be elected in BC. He started his political life as an Alderman on Richmond Council in 1973. He served for 30 years on the Richmond City Council and is its 3rd longest serving member. Over the years he has served on numerous GVRD Boards and Richmond committees – including Finance, Housing and Water committees. This year we are recognizing a past grad – Ms. Kay Sakata.
Mrs.Sakata was born in Steveston in 1916 – which makes her 100 years old. She is a grad of the class of 1934 – which was 82 years ago. TheRichmond High she attended was on Bridgeport Road across from
where Costco is today. The Richmond High Alumni Association would like to recognize Mrs. Kay Sakata for a life “well lived”. Not many of our past grads have lived to 100 years of age and we felt that it was important to acknowledge this milestone. To mark this special occasion we will be placing a bench out behind the school near the gardens with Mrs. Sakata’s name on it.
Congratulations to
Mrs. Sakata.
Words from Mrs. Sakata.
Thank you. It is an honour to be here. I never imagined I would be at a high school graduation like this with almost 300 students graduating. When I went to Richmond High School it was from
grade 9 to grade 12 and it was located on Bridgeport Road. I lived in Steveston, by the river near where Britannia Shipyards is today. I took the Inter-urban tram from Steveston to Bridgeport to go to Richmond High School. When I started Richmond High School there were only 35 pupils, but in those
days many students had to quit school to go to work, so by grade 12 there were only 11 students who graduated. We were called Matriculation class of 1933-1934.

This year R.S.S. Alumni presented the "special Recognition" Award to a person who grew up in Vancouver and graduated from Strathcona High School. He went on to work for the Airlines for 25 years and then Westburne Electric for 8 years before coming to Richmond High in 2002. He is very VERY VERY frugal and you don't ever want to owe him any money. We are pleased to present the award to Mr. John Bezzasso.

Every year at the Valedictory Ceremony held at the Chan Centre, the RSS Alumni Association selects a recipient for the Special Recognition Award. At the Valedictory ceremony in June 2014 we wanted to surprise Mrs Marni (Maitland) Glier. Due to the job action she was unable to attend so we did “surprise” her before the school year was over. Mrs. Glier works with our young students that are about to become parents. Congratulations Mrs. Glier

This years’ recipient has been described by the students as very talented, humorous, a sports enthusiast, and musician extraordinaire. The students are amazed by this person and they have great respect for this person who is also firm but fair. This person began their teaching career at Richmond High in 1997. They transplanted to BC from St. John, Newfoundland. This person not only teaches our students how to sing and play all the instruments he also plays in his own jazz band as well as a number of other bands that play professionally. He can play virtually any instrument. He is an extremely talented and hardworking individual. Whether it’s playing music, hockey, taking his groups on band trips, undertaking a home renovation, or spending time with his wife Melanie and his 2 daughters – he is the whole package. He brings a great sense of humour and incredible work ethic to the many things he does. He spends numerous hours both in and out of class and is a “Class Act”. We are very fortunate to have him at our school. If you haven’t already guessed who this is,
This year's Alumni Special Recognition goes to Mr. Tony Sheppard.

This year’s recipient is a student in your graduating class. This person is conscientious, considerate, caring, observant, intelligent and generous. This is a Grad that is never afraid to take creative risks. And this person doesn’t just dream big, either; whether it’s planning, organizing, executing or leading, this student can do it all. “He” or “she” has devoted countless hours to help create an inclusive, multicultural and sustainable school community. Never one to accept recognition for the amazing work that they do, this student inspires his peers and teachers through his sincere desire and dedication to build a brighter and greener future. He cares greatly about the world around him and the impact we humans have upon it. He is an independent thinker of considerable integrity, creativity and promise. His tact and diplomacy are admired by all who meet him. He has folded over 1000 origami cranes to promote the message of Peace, this demonstrates his incredible patience and dedication. He has sorted through (literally) tonnes of garbage, compost and recyclables in an effort to improve our school’s waste management system, and sold hundreds of pieces of sushi to fundraise for the Japan Club. Our Green Team, now a district-wide model for other schools, is what it is today because of his charismatic and dedicated leadership. If you have not yet guessed which remarkable young man we are talking about, then that is simply one more testament to his humility.
This year’s recipient for the Richmond High Alumni – Special Recognition is Ian Tom. Please welcome Ian Tom to the stage.
